"Anyway... romance novels use clichés. They’re all about endless love and stuff. They’re not very meaningful," he said with a forced smile. "You don't plan on writing one too, do you?"

I pull my cardigan tighter around me, trying not to look like a woman unraveling on her fourth glass of wine. “I don’t write sex, Chloe. I write romance without all the detailed intimacy, I write about repressed trauma, losing a loved one, mystery, horror even not two people who’ve never met each other dirty talking and moan— oh God.” She takes my wine glass and replaces it with her full one. “Exactly. You’ve built an empire off tragedy. I think your readers are ready to read something based on actual pleasure or erotic tension.” “Ew. Who even reads things like that?”

“I’m sorry, but it’s true. Men think wiggling their eyebrows at us or doing what you were doing is sexy, but really, it isn’t, especially when you’re dressed like that.” I shrug and slump on the bed next to her. “I just thought it was romantic, you know?” She leans over to the side of the bed and pulls out a romance book from under the pillow. “Use this. It’s the best manual for what girls really like.” I take the book and study the cover. A man is kissing the neck of a woman whose blouse is slightly off her shoulder. “Blah,” I say and toss the book to the side. I actually think I’ve read it before.

I said with more confidence. "With face it is" "Thanks" "What is your story about anyway?" he leaned closer to the table and put his arms on it. "It's a romance novel and I would like to refer to it as such. Despite the pornographic details on it. It's a story of a bad boy falling for an innocent and fragile girl. He's a wild spirit and she is conservative... two opposites attract" I giggled and I didn't even know why. "They have sex like crazy in every position I could think of, anywhere and every time they meet" I kept giggling like a little girl and he smiled like he enjoyed our conversation. That was good...

*** We open the store, help a couple of early customers, and within ten minutes Matteo has commandeered a stack of receipts and started sketching circles and arrows like we’re planning a heist. “Okay,” he says. “Option one: classic romance.” “Define classic.” “Candlelit dinner. Somewhere intimate. You get down on one knee. Boom. Tears.” “That’s… reasonable,” I say. He grimaces. “But expected.” “Cara likes expected,” I argue. “She likes thoughtful,” he counters. “There’s a difference.” A woman browsing the romance section coughs pointedly, clearly eavesdropping. Matteo lowers his voice anyway. “Option two: chaos.”

But Arabella’s heart had already begun beating far too quickly. A breeze moved softly through the marketplace between them. Neither spoke for several moments. Then Edwin finally gestured toward the bookstore. “Do you enjoy reading?” “Yes.” “What sort of books?” Arabella hesitated. “Poetry mostly.” One dark brow lifted slightly. “Romantic poetry?” Her cheeks warmed instantly. “Sometimes.” Edwin looked dangerously amused again. “You continue to surprise me, Lady Arabella.” “And you continue mocking me.” “Only because you blush so beautifully.” The words escaped him so naturally that both of them froze afterward.

Even so, the whole process feels like a battle, and I am already exhausted by the time I have the books in my hands. I still read romantic novels. There is something comforting about them, even if some of the stories hit a little too close to home. Some of the plots are eerily similar to my own life, while others are pure escapism—beautiful, heartwarming tales from start to finish. Sure, the characters face hardships and tribulations, but what always stands out to me is the love and trust between the couples. It is the kind of love that feels unshakable, the kind I used to dream about. Now, I am not so sure if that kind of love exists for me anymore.

She said. "Come on this is not a marriage proposal, do you think my marriage proposal will be as lame as this? I can be very romantic when I want to be you know." I said and she laughed. "You? Romantic? Okay tell me, how will your marriage proposal be?" She asked. "You'll only get to find out if you accept to date me now so do you?" I asked. "I told you so." She said. "What?" "I told you back then remember? You said you weren't ever going to fall in love, I told you that you will and I'll be here to say I told you so when that happens." She said and I laughed.

Author's POV What is Romance? this is the question I always asked myself and I found that........ Romance is the language of love. It is the way that you show your partner that you care about them. Every person has their own idea of what they might consider romantic. For some, it will be dressing up for the other or buying flowers or jewelry. There is no way to know what is romantic without knowing the person. Romance is created by the feeling that you are genuinely cared about. All romance has one thing in common; it must show the other person that you care enough to find out what is meaningful to them.
