For a second his face was painted in emergency colors, then gone.
He reached past me for the coffee pot. His arm brushed my breast, accidental, maybe, and heat flared low in my belly, sharp and shameful. The ceramic mug he poured from was the same one I’d stolen sips from at sixteen. Blue rim, chipped handle.
“Still take it black?” he asked.
“You remember.”
“I remember everything.”
The words hung there, heavy as the humidity pressing against the windows. I took the mug because my hands needed something to do. The coffee scalded my tongue, it was bitter and perfect.
