With my heart beating as quickly as a hummingbird's, I took a seat. Jace smiled and handed me a comic book. As I held it in my hands, I could feel the timelessness and age in it. I could feel that it was special. I stared at Batman's figure, Robin standing right behind him. The background colour was yellow and the old Batman logo was at the top of the cover. My jaw dropped as I ran my fingers across the cover. "This is an antique!" I whispered in shock. I stared at him. "Do you know how much it's worth?"

He looked back at me with a challenging look. "DC?" I asked him feigning ignorance and taking my time to think. He bought my act and had a victorious smile on. "Well, I won't hold it against you but I do believe that Marvel comics are way better than DC's" I winked for closure then grabbed my second treat. "Wow! I think I should pretend I didn't hear what you just said. Marvel? really?". He kept shaking his head as if he was trying to get my answer out of his mind. "I mean Batman, Superman..... these are THE superheroes !!"

Dorian declared. "DC comics still have the best backstories." Zachary shook his head in disapproval. "Dude, have you seen their movies? They're way better than Batman vs. Superman," Shawn said, holding a can of soda. "I agree, that movie didn't make sense how Batman stopped Superman's punch," Kairos added. "That's because Superman was weakened from the extreme exposure of Kryptonite." Zack huffed, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose again. "I didn't know you watch superhero movies too." Maddie was stunned at the brunette. "I thought the Queenz were more into boring chick flicks."

She sat across from him. "I'll be direct." She folded her hands. "Work for us." Elias stared. "Excuse me?" "The payment is generous." He laughed once. "You kidnapped me." A pause. "You took my friend. And now you want me to work for you? And do whatever weird stuff you guys do here." The woman didn't react. "Do you know what we do here?" Elias looked around. "Aside kidnapping? Not exactly." "We save humanity." He stared. She continued. "Behind the scenes." She leaned back. "We remove things that can destroy the world before people even know they exist." She paused. "Have you heard of the beast of High that destroyed an entire country within a few hours?”

Two things, actually. One: A wooden crate full of smashed vintage soda bottles, circa 1960s. Shards of Coke, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi bottles and the emerald green bits of a few 7UP bottles. Two: The wreckage of a homemade, cheap plywood comic book rack, littered with torn and crumpled comic books, all the classics: Batman, The Astounding X-men, Superman and ROM: Space Knight, shredded into ruin. I stared, my face rigid, when a brisk, non-confrontational but stiff voice asked, “Can I help you?”

As she steps down from the bus, I shake my head and laugh softly. “So,” I say, catching her attention, “you’re a Marvel girl.” She looks up at me, eyes bright, already smiling. “Is there any other option?” she asks. I chuckle. “I don’t know about that. I’m all DC.” She tilts her head. “DC? Like Superman and Batman?” “Of course,” I say. “And not just them. I love the Fantastic Four.” She slows her step as we walk toward the crosswalk with the rest of the crowd. “Oh, really?”

"All right, I stopped over to say hi. If you would like to interact with some of the other children and get to know some of the other Justice League members present today, we have some games and puzzles set up in the playroom. Not even the Hulk or Spider-Man?Riley enquired. She gave a headshake. "Me, Batman, Superman, and the Flash." Riley released a sigh. "Well, I guess that's alright, but I really like the Marvel comics series." Wonder Woman gave Finn a fierce look as he tried to disguise his stifled laughter with a cough. Maybe The Avengers will come by next week. The Justice League has the week off.

MADDIE POV I want to shake my head at her pop-culture reference. She loves to read comic books to the pack orphans, especially those who are struggling with their reading comprehension. It is where Dan gets his love of comic books, he was once a pack orphan. Because of that activity, she has a deep knowledge of all the comic book superheroes and villains. Not to mention a comic book collection that rivels even the most obsessive of professional collectors. She even has multiple rare comics signed by Stan Lee himself, the legendary comic book genius. Goddess rest him.

There were plenty of roofing nails poking through the wood above me. I made it to the boxes with my skull intact and knelt to examine the magazines. My stomach fluttered when I realized there might be Playboy or Penthouse magazines among the contents. At eleven, I knew what they were, but I wasn’t quite at the point I understood what the big deal was, though that fluttering in my gut told me I was almost there. As it turned out, there were no skin mags in the boxes, but to a kid my age, what was in them was an even greater treasure. Old comic books. Tons of them. Spider-Man, Superman, The Avengers, Planet of the Apes, Archie, Scary Tales, and a bunch of others I’d never heard of. I grabbed a

Few minutes later, she put down the book and closed her eyes, sighing as sleep drew her in. It was so peaceful, a meaningless dream enclosed her. Somewhere in the dream, she heard a creak. Shaking it off, Her dream continued. Hurried footsteps jolted her from the stupid dream.
