I tipped my head towards the boxes in my head and realization filled her eyes. "Oh, oh! I'm so sorry, I left you alone to carry all the gifts. I'll just take them from you." I shook my head, " There's no need, you shouldn't be carrying anything heavy while you're pregnant." Coraline rolled her eyes, " I'm barely three months pregnant. I think I'm capable of carrying a box containing books and a jewelry box." She stretched her hands to collect the box but I moved away not giving her the chance to take it away from me.

Isabelle joked, making Corinne laugh nearby and, of course, even though Hunter was just a meter away from the two, neither of them seemed to notice his presence there. “Thanks for the advice. I think I would end up making that mistake one time or another.” Corinne continued with a huge smile as she looked at the list of Alphas that would be visiting them that day “Oh, the Swan Alpha will be coming? I remember hearing about him. I guess that’s why you asked Lilac to do this fancy makeup on me?” She blinked crookedly, as if she was still trying to get used to all the black products lining her eyes and making them even more crystal clear and intense.

Hope always did. Especially when you weren't used to it. One evening Camille arrived carrying a notebook. A large notebook. Filled with sketches. Ideas. Plans. The young artist looked nervous. Excited. Terrified. All at once. Jessica recognised the expression immediately. "What is it?" Camille sat opposite her. Then pushed the notebook across the desk. "I have an idea." The words sounded important. The notebook contained dozens of rough drawings. Portraits. Landscapes. Abstract concepts.

I looked away immediately, then lifted my hand as casually and discreetly as possible to hold it over my heart. She was too beautiful. My hands itched to paint her smile, and her dimple, to sketch something. So that’s what I did. I leaned forward, then grabbed my pencil off the table. Flipping the back of my copy of The Great Gatsby, I sketched away. “Since we have a new student today,” Professor Coraline’s voice continued. “Why don’t we waver with a sink question?” The smart board lit up, and there appeared a quote, well….several quotes actually. She opened to a blank page. Picked up the pencil. And began. She drew a woman with her mouth sewn shut. A mask tied to her face with gold ribbons. A shadow of a man watching from behind a gilded cage. The pencil moved faster. Darker. Chains. A crown. A bed of roses with thorns pressed into flesh.

Slowly ,the line drew up again with a little orealea caught by a webbed foot. Cornelia stood on the fore deck of 'the regal',looking down into the water. She could imagine people - humans - just like her swimming around and getting about their daily businesses down there. She had seen something that day. It was no beast or sea monster or fish or siren or even a mermaid. It was human. "This is not right." She said partly to herself. "I know " Roland's voice came from behind her. She turned around to see him walking up the stairs with a harpoon in his hands "but what other option do we have?"

I said laughing. Coral peered at the list, "She's a bad egg, that one. She's one of Cerelith's–how should I put it, decorative shadows. Lanky, dramatic, says 'darling' too much." I raised an eyebrow, "That bad?" Coral tilted her head, "She's not wicked, just..... persistent. Especially where your husband is concerned." The air cooled a fraction. "Persistent?" I echoed. "She was obsessed with him before he went to war," coral said with a shrug. "Still is. I think. She used to write him poems and slip them through the garden gate. Cerelith found it hilarious."

October 9, 2003 – 22:00 Coralis was on her way home from her flyball game. Her team had a solid victory against Morocco. As she was about to enter the Laval skyline, she sensed she was being followed. Not wanting to lead her stalker to where she lives, she decided to circle the city anti-clockwise. She didn’t want to be seen entering the Montreal skyline.

The hair on my arms rose, and a chill crept up my spine. Gavin noticed and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his side as we walked up the front steps and towards the front door. The door opened before we reached it fully, and we both froze in our steps. Coraline Blackwell didn’t step out of the house. Her small frame filled the doorway like a shadow that decided to solidify. She looked older than she was, but according to Selene, Cora was Zachary’s little sister. She had her silver hair pulled back, sharp cheekbones, and deep-set eyes that looked as if they saw straight through me. But nothing about her felt fragile. If anything, she radiated authority.
