The three of us are very close, like brothers, I am the only child, very happy with their presence in my house, Ronald is the oldest among us, then Caroline and then me. We reminisce about our childhood on the way to the restaurant. We have a lot of childhood memories together, and to this day our relationship as siblings is still good, even closer. Many people think Ronald is my boyfriend because we don't look alike, and many don't know that he is my cousin. After all, Ronald is not my ideal type, he has a lifestyle that doesn't suit me, doesn't know the rules, and is also reckless.

Mom and Dad exchanged a look, their fury intensifying. "Melanie Spencer, get out here right this instant! Stop hiding in there, pretending like you can't hear us! How can you be so rude? How dare you call your cousin an outsider! You know what? You're the outsider in this family! You have no right to talk to your cousin like that!" All that they received in response was dead silence. My body was lying in that bathtub, the one I'd dreamed of soaking in just once. My eyes were wide open. Beneath me was a pool of bloody water.

Folding my arms across my chest, I asked, "Are you Chase’s brother?" "Oh God no! Although, I can't deny that, sadly, we are related. I'm his cousin. Our dads are brothers. But please don't hold that against me. I promise I'm nothing like him," he replied honestly. I thought I’d have stayed mad at him for not telling me right away, but in all honesty, he didn't really have a chance to. My posture relaxed, right along with my expression. I let the jacket open as I unfolded my arms and held my hand towards the boat. "Shall we go eat?"

he said with an evil grin. "You're his cousin. How were you suppose to be the crown prince. It was always meant to be Zen after his father" I said to him protested. He came near me as he grabbed my chin. "No he was not" he glared into me. "You see me and Zen are not simply cousin. He and I are brothers" he said. "That can't be Zen has only one sibling" I said. "Ya he has one sibling. But I am thier brother. You know to be specific I am their step brother" he said.

"You haven't said anything about yourself." "What do you want to know about me?" "Um.. are you Sean sister?" I asked. "Cousin. My Father was aunt Julia's elder brother." "Why do you call him your brother?" I asked. "We were born on the same day. So, our parents thought we'd make great siblings as we both didn't have one. But, for some strange reason, it annoys him. He never wanted a younger sister, he says they're peachy. His words not mine. I don't even know what it means." She said with an innocent scowl.

Alone with her thoughts, her fears… and that curiosity she didn’t want to admit. Nathan. The twin brother. The opposite. A stranger who, she sensed already, would disrupt her fragile balance. She remembered the stories Thomas had once told about his brother. Colorful, almost romantic tales. Nathan in Bali, lying in a hammock suspended between two palm trees. Nathan in Tokyo, tasting improbable dishes in hidden alleys. Nathan again, facing a storm in the Moroccan desert, or sharing a cigarette with a stranger on the roof of a train in India.

I have to let him down nicely so our relationship won't be awkward. "Zayne, I'm flattered, I really am, but our parents are married, which makes you my stepbrother. There are way too many fishes in the ocean to go fishing in my family pool, even if we aren't technically related." I say the words, trying to convince myself that is how I really feel, but my wet panties know otherwise. A look of confusion flashed across his face before he starts laughing... A gutsy laugh that I found endearing for a second until I realize he's laughing at me.

I nodded, words failing me. He smiled and closed the door as the cab pulled away. I watched through the window as his figure faded into the glow of the mall lights. The ride back was quiet except for the radio. My pulse still raced, his touch lingering on my skin. Why do I feel this way? I pressed a palm to my chest, exhaling slowly. He was my sister’s husband. My brother-in-law. There was no reason my body should react like this. I stared out the window, forcing my mind elsewhere.
