He led me about ten feet to the left of the path, pushing aside a thick, snow-laden bush. The stench hit me first the cloying, sweet smell of decay, masked by the cold but unmistakable. Lying in a shallow hollow was a skeleton, clad in the rotted remnants of what looked like leather armor. It was curled in on itself, its spine arched unnaturally. Embedded in its ribcage and the frozen earth beneath it were dozens of long, sharpened wooden stakes that had clearly shot out from the side of the path. A cold dread, entirely different from the chill of the mountain, seeped into my bones.

He's twenty years old and he's baiting a thing built out of a hundred dead people’s bones into chasing him, and there's no time to be sick about it because I have to get to Leon. A wolf skeleton. Fully articulated, bones bleached bone-white by years in the water. The skull grinned at me—empty sockets, jagged canines, the spine trailing ribbons of decayed flesh that drifted like pale seaweed. One foreleg was still caught in rusted chain, the other broken at an impossible angle. The ribcage had been cracked open—long ago, violently—like someone had reached in and torn the heart out. My lungs seized. I choked. Water rushed in—cold, bitter, burning down my throat. Panic clawed up my spine. I thrashed, vision tunneling, black spots blooming at the edges.

I threw the sword, and it went rolling end over end, slicing off the head of the skeleton and shattering it to pieces. I grabbed hold of a skeleton rapier's hand, twisted it backwards, and I could hear the sound of bone cracking. I transformed my hand into a huge boulder and then used it to knock its head off. It went scattered. I swashed aside, then jumped and kicked a skeleton on the chest, and the bone went crashing due to the force. I stretched my hand, and the sword appeared back in my hand. I jumped in the air and planted my two feet on two skeletons' chests, and their bones cracked. Out of the corner of my eyes, I could see the squirrel cat biting one skeleton. It was jumping from one

"For now. My hounds do not like metal. It breaks their teeth." The creature stood up. It was tall, impossibly thin. Its bones clicked like dice in a cup. "But hunger is creative, Warden. If you cannot eat the nut... you eat the soil around it." The Skeleton walked to the ventilation shaft. He sniffed the air drifting down from D.C. "The boy is safe. But his garden..." The Skeleton smiled. His teeth were needles. "The garden is soft." He reached into his rags and pulled out a handful of dust. It wasn't gray dust. It was red.
