Caspian glanced at the skeleton and said lightly, "Return the sword or die." The skeleton was stunned. The next moment, he was so angry that he laughed. "Boy, do you think you can pretend to be strong just because you've changed your expression?" The skeleton opened and closed his upper and lower jaw. "Do you know what realm I'm in? I'm..." Swoosh! Pa! Peng! Before he could finish, Caspian waved his arm. There was a crisp sound, and then there was a cracking sound. At this moment, half of the skeleton's head exploded like broken porcelain, and his body flew out horizontally. He fell to the ground and rolled several times, almost falling apart.

He led me about ten feet to the left of the path, pushing aside a thick, snow-laden bush. The stench hit me first the cloying, sweet smell of decay, masked by the cold but unmistakable. Lying in a shallow hollow was a skeleton, clad in the rotted remnants of what looked like leather armor. It was curled in on itself, its spine arched unnaturally. Embedded in its ribcage and the frozen earth beneath it were dozens of long, sharpened wooden stakes that had clearly shot out from the side of the path. A cold dread, entirely different from the chill of the mountain, seeped into my bones.

“That’s what most people call it anyways. It’s actually called the clavicle.” Derek began to blush. Excitement rushed through me as I realized Tyler was trying to continue our plan. We were supposed to be making Derek jealous! I pointed at my hips and looked up at Tyler. “And these are?” I asked. “That’s the coxal bone,” he answered. “And this?” I pointed to the center of the chest. “The sternum.” The way he said it made me bite my tongue. “He really is a good student,” I said, looking back at Derek. He was practically shaking. “I’m very impressed with how quickly he’s learned the skeleton.”

The skull grinned at me—empty sockets, jagged canines, the spine trailing ribbons of decayed flesh that drifted like pale seaweed. My lungs seized. I choked. Water rushed in—cold, bitter, burning down my throat. Panic clawed up my spine. I thrashed, vision tunneling, black spots blooming at the edges.

If you cannot eat the nut... you eat the soil around it." The Skeleton walked to the ventilation shaft. He sniffed the air drifting down from D.C. "The boy is safe. But his garden..." The Skeleton smiled. His teeth were needles. "The garden is soft." He reached into his rags and pulled out a handful of dust. It wasn't gray dust. It was red.

I was cornered. While the skeleton continued to advance on me, I shut my eyes and shook my head. “This isn’t real… This isn’t real…” The sound of bones rattling toward me was replaced by the sound of those very bones being kicked to the floor. I opened my eyes to see a large figure in the dark, wearing a hoodie with the hood up, standing over the skeleton as it writhed and kicked on the floor. It swiped a bony hand at the figure and slashed it in the thigh, but the figure retaliated by picking the skeleton up by its throat -- well, where its throat would have been, if it had flesh.

He asked, I could see the suspension in his eyes. "I don't know, we can't say anything until we see the full picture," I spoke, and began looking at the other skeletons after taking the picture from him. Things were too complicated at this point, a place nearly away from the civilization and on the hill especially situated and now destroyed. This could really mean something we were unaware of, again these three dead people who were in front of us now only in skeletons that would soon turn into fossils.
