They were meant to hold. “I am just saying. I don’t feel like eating campers tonight.” My brother shuddered at the memory. It was ugly. But that was just the effect of the full moon. It made my beast feral. It drove him insane. So one night he escaped and munched on a bunch of tourists who were just camping in the forest. The news was a nightmare after that incident. “You will do just fine. I am here.” He stopped next to me, then placed a hand on my shoulder, a silent message passing through his black eyes.

Alvin, ever the joker, was making failed attempts at shadow puppets, but it was Nathan who commanded our attention. “Okay, are you guys ready for a real ghost story?” he said, grinning at the prospect of scaring the wits out of us. “Once upon a time…” With that wicked smile of his, Nathan launched into a tale so creepy that it had us both quaking. It was a story about evil spirits that haunted the very woods we were camping in. He described the ghosts in vivid detail—their hollow eyes, their twisted forms—and even mimicked the haunting sounds they supposedly made. By the end of it, Alvin and I were gripping our sleeping bags, our eyes darting nervously to the tree line beyond the campfire.

I let out a short laugh and hurried to polish off my hot dog so I could have some marshmallows as well. Dinner was an odd affair. It was strange to sit around and tell stories and laugh as if we were camping. Gerard was telling a tale about the time he was fifteen and thought he could hike across a mountain with a bag of potato chips and mini snickers bars. One of the twins had his guitar with him and started playing some music through the night. Olli moved from between us to sit between the twins, they still gave him some candy here and there while we weren't looking. Soon I finished exploring the campsite but found nothing unusual. "David, check the mountain foot you mentioned," a voice came through my earpiece. I nodded slightly and left the campsite, heading toward the dark mountainside. Occasional animal calls and rustling leaves made me shrink my neck, but thinking of Aaron's tragic death gave me courage to continue. Suddenly, a bright light shone in my face. I closed my eyes and raised my hand to block it. "Stop!" Several burly men appeared before me.

John probed gently, wanting to understand the tale hidden behind those haunted eyes. The girl suddenly looked up, her dark eyes meeting John's as she started her story. "The campsite had been unattended for almost two days," she began, her voice tinged with exhaustion. "I thought someone had abandoned it, and I was desperate. I've been running for days. A pack of wolves attacked the village that my skulk and I were a part of. They were searching for something or someone," she explained, her voice filled with trepidation. "My mama managed to communicate through the link, urging me to hide and run," she finished, a hint of unshed tears glistening in her eyes.
