It spiraled up into the dark. My heartbeat thumped louder in my ears. I started climbing the steps. I brushed away the cobwebs as I went. Dust hung in the air like little ghosts floating around. I finally reached the top. It was not the regular attic up there. This was another one hidden above the main attic. No one remembered it anymore. Boxes filled the space everywhere. Dust and old sheets covered them thick. I sneezed softly from the air. Then I knelt down by one box. A strange feeling tugged in my chest.

“Don’t—yelling.” “Then don’t—going back to sleep, Bleetch.” The word tears my eyes open. I’m once again on a damn bed, where I once again don’t remember lying down. My internal clock is shot, and I have no clue whether it’s day or night. I instinctively move my neck—ouch—checking for sunlight pouring in, and find . . . No windows. I’m in a wooden attic, large and climate-controlled, with ceiling-high shelves full of books on every wall. There is a plate on the coffee table nearby with leftover pasta smeared all over it, and a small pile of soda cans and plastic water bottles.

He looks around and finds a loose, square board. The bald man pulls off the board and pops open the other wood with his elbow before climbing into the hole. Once inside, he slowly creeps toward the attic. Making sure not to make a noise, he tails Scarlett down there. She is somewhere ahead, the darkness covering her figure but he can hear her footsteps. Suddenly, her footsteps come to a halt.

Callie opened her eyes and she was inside the attic, she looked around and realized it wasn’t hers but she also recognized it. She had been there before. It looked like the same attic where she saw the boy with the green eyes, she spun around and saw a mirror with bronze framing, it had carvings all over it. She walked over curious, her fingers traced all over the carvings committing everything to memory. It was very fine work and she smiled her eyes appreciating it. She took a step back and decided to explore the rest of the attic.

Kyle nodded frantically, scrambling onto his feet to get to work. The attic was completely dark. The only light source was a tiny, dusty window that barely let any evening light inside. The attic was incredibly stuffy, hot, and was packed entirely to the brim. In the middle of the room was a small bed, then the rest of the space was filled from floor to ceiling with heavy storage boxes of unused items. It was very obvious that the Sawyers wanted Kyle to be as uncomfortable as possible in the attic.

After that, I spent my time upstairs. The corridor upstairs was a bit more creepy; cobwebs strewn across the ceiling, gold-carved lamps on the walls, and every door that I opened upstairs turned out to be a room with a perfectly made bed. Maybe the people who used to live here had OCD or something. Everything was so clean. Unlike my own room. The sky had gone completely dark by the time I reached up in the attic. It was the only small room in this house, and very dusty. I had to look around the compact room for a few seconds to make sure there weren't any bats or wild rats in here—I genuinely hoped not.

The glint came from a large, ornate chest, its brass fittings polished and pristine as if untouched by time. Sasha hesitated, her instincts warring against her curiosity, but something compelled her to lift the heavy lid.
