Caitlin squeezed her grandmother’s hand, feeling as though it may the last time she saw her alive, then turned and climbed the steps. The attic was dusty and piled with boxes, old furniture and bags of discarded clothing. Mice had nibbled holes through the cardboard and left their droppings in a trail across the floor. Caitlin crinkled her nose in disgust as she tiptoed over to the place where she leather box should be.

He ordered and his men grabbed her hands and started to drag her up the stairs, towards the attic. "She is a lovely kitten." One of them snickered. "Oh yeah. Caden asked, looking around. She pointed up to a crawl space. "Up there." Caden pulled the string at the ceiling, releasing the trap door, and wooden stairs unfolded from the ceiling. He climbed the stairs and stepped up into the attic. It was big enough to stand up in with open rafters and exposed beams. But it had a floor solid enough to walk on. He looked around and boxes were setting off to the side. "Come on up and show me which of these boxes you want," Caden yelled down.

“Fine. Don’t keep me waiting too long.” I chuckled, grabbing a towel, drying myself quickly as I strode back across the property. My pace quickened as soon as I was out of sight. The hidden attic lay above the west wing. Few knew it existed. Fewer still had ever been inside. I climbed the narrow staircase, the air growing heavier the higher I went.
