Whatever it was, I found myself too aware of how handsome he was. "Diana Wilson," he said, easing into the chair opposite me, "happy birthday." I blinked. "Birthday?" From his leather bag, he pulled out a small cupcake neatly wrapped. He set it on the table between us. I stared at it as though it were a mirage. In here, days blurred into one another. No calendars. No celebrations. Only the sun and moon reminded us whether it was day or night. "What day is it?" I whispered. "April 26th," he said softly, as though he wanted me to believe time still mattered. He pulled out a tiny decorative candle, lit it with a silver lighter, and placed it atop the cupcake. "Make a wish, Diana. Blow it out."
