Shadows flicker red beneath my door now, dancing like cruel spirits. “Run!” The word echoes in my skull. The door bursts inward in a spray of sparks and splintered wood. Flames roar behind a towering silhouette. A man steps through the fire. I cannot see his face — only the outline of him carved in burning light. And his eyes. They glow. Not with reflection. With power. The world fractures into red and gold. Heat devours everything. The scream tears from my throat— I wake choking on smoke that isn’t there. My room is dark. Quiet. Whole.

My voice cracked on the words because I was certain that he did love me. Confusion marred her perfect features. “Is he sick?” Because truly, that would be the only other problem. “He's cursed.” I blurted out. “Cursed?” She sounded disbelieving. “Yes, cursed.” I spent the next few minutes explaining Brian's curse, his age, the death of his prior mates, and the future event of my possible death.

But the moment of triumph didn’t last long. “I hate to be the bearer of ill news,” Elder Roth said suddenly, setting his goblet down with a grave look. His white beard quivered slightly as he leaned over the map. “But there remain three southern packs yet untouched. And those…” he paused, casting a glance around the room, “those are cursed.” Silence fell like a guillotine. “Cursed?” I repeated, my voice low. Dangerous. “Their Alpha Kings are bound by blood pacts, ancient black magic. Even if you go in with all your armies, Damien, the magic will devour your wolves before they reach the gates.”

LAVINIA'S POV "Son, I still don't understand why you agreed to this marriage in the first place, we could have easily gone to war instead. That girl is cursed, she could bring destruction to our pack but yet you're still adamant about it." Alpha Argo said and my heart clenched. I didn't realize it but tears had gathered at the edge of my eyes. Was this really what my future father in-law thought about me? How can he refer to me as cursed and a bringer of destruction? Why couldn't they just tell me straight? What is the origin of the curse for it to demand so much cautiousness to prevent backlash? There was one thing I knew for sure. The curse was either placed on blood wolves by a god or a demon. Only those two creatures could place a curse that would affect the law of casualty. It won't be hard to believe that a god did it because they are fond of cursing people at the slightest provocation.
