Damian stood panting at the railing, watching the water.
I scrambled up and ran to him. "Damian!" I grabbed him, checking him for wounds. "Did he hit you? Are you okay?" Damian turned to me. He was soaked, bleeding, and shaking. But his eyes were clear. "It's done," he whispered. "He's gone." He pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my hair. "We're safe," he said. "Leo is safe." We stood there on the dam, holding each other in the rain, while the adrenaline slowly drained away, leaving us empty but alive. The war was over. But as I looked back toward the cabin, where my son was holding the hand of a dying mercenary, I knew the healing had just begun.
