Kane stood in McLauren's office , the scent of aged whiskey and stale cigar smoke hanging heavy in the air. The old man gray-haired, fat, and always with a drink in hand poured himself another glass, his beady eyes fixed on Kane. "You're the face of this place, son," McLauren sighed, swirling the amber liquid before downing it in one gulp. "It's sad to see you go." Kane didn't flinch. He had never liked McLauren. The man was ruthless, a businessman first, a human second. But Kane respected him, if only because he had given him purpose when he had nothing.

Those were hazards of the job, people called war a racket and the idea that someone could benefit from the destruction of lives and property to some people was immoral

The men were glued to the television. Ten minutes later, nothing unusual was broadcasted by the anchor rather than news highlights and excerpts. “Someone is playing games with me,” David said. He grabbed the remote and was about to turn off the TV when the anchor said something that grabbed his attention. “Griffin Dane, one of New York’s business moguls has requested for a two-minute life address after following our protocols. We will have him after the break.” The 30 seconds commercial break felt like an eternity for David and Leonard.

The man’s family was well known, and we knew that killing him would end up getting us in trouble. She blinked against the brightness, her eyes struggling after days in the dark. A group of men stood in a semi-circle. At the center was a tall, broad-shouldered man with weathered skin, gray-flecked hair tied back, and a wide grin that didn’t reach his sharp, calculating eyes. His coat was leather, his boots polished, and his presence commanded the attention of everyone around him. “So you’re the one everyone’s been whispering about,” he said, voice gravelly with a hint of amusement. Serena glared at him, straightening as much as her weakened body allowed.
