The experience of being a foreigner in that bizarre landscape allowed him to write with a clarity that's both hilarious and terrifying. It reflects his life not through major events, but through the profound culture shock he channeled into perhaps his darkest comedy. He took a real visit and turned it into a grotesque masterpiece about denial and pretense.

I'm just sitting here nodding along. I've read them all in publication order twice. Can't decide which way is best. Maybe chronological is the answer? You see the war change him, the conversion to Catholicism deepen his work. It's a fascinating literary journey. But is it the most fun for a newcomer? Probably not. 'Decline and Fall' is a riot, so maybe start there and then go chronologically from that high point.

The contrast between town and country is huge in these novels. London is all speed, gossip, and sin in 'Vile Bodies'. The country is either boring (to the Bright Young Things) or a sacred, dying ideal (to Tony Last). The tension between these two Englands—the modern, amoral metropolis and the traditional, decaying countryside—is a central conflict of the era. Waugh shows characters trapped in one and longing for the other, never finding peace in either.
