ADRIAN’S POV The interstate stretched endlessly ahead, a ribbon of asphalt cutting through Oregon's rolling hills. Twenty-nine days left. I kept the speedometer at exactly the limit, knowing that getting pulled over would be catastrophic. Beside me, Elena sat with her laptop balanced on her knees, researching Kane like our lives depended on it. Which they did. "Tell me about him," she said without looking up. "Kane. Kane spoke louder, silencing the little murmuring that had begun since Caden spoke. Confused eyes met other confused eyes, with everyone turning from left to right, trying to figure out what the second option was. Earlier when Kane and I remained in the living room, I had asked him what his plan was for Caden, if he planned to let him live. “No,” he said, shaking his head, “but I intend to do something with him before his execution.” I guessed this was it. “Your first option,” Kane stood directly in front of Caden, staring down at him like he was filthy. Thankfully I had a better view than the Elders whose view was now Kane’s back.

This is the stillness of a man whose worst fear has just been handed a name and a location and a timestamp. Kane. Younger than me. Easier than me. A man who exists in rooms without armor because he has never needed armor, who laughs with his whole face, who works for her father and has no debt to collect and no fifteen years of damage sitting between him and the simplest version of wanting her. I sit with the report for two hours.

I asked. Kane finally looked up, his voice low. “Because he's watching. Kane comfortably sent Maris a selfie of him and Lani taken earlier. Maris couldn't stop praising how obedient and beautiful Lani looked, truly living up to her status as a famous actress. After a while, Maris remembered something and asked, "Have you informed your father about this?" At the mention of his father, Kane's gaze momentarily turned cold and filled with disdain. He raised his head to look at the white ceiling and replied casually, "Why should I inform him? He's happily living with my stepmother and their beloved son, not interested in my life at all.
