Chloe’s heart raced as she flipped through sketch books, finally settling on a delicate design: a small crescent moon entwined with a star.
“Here,” she said, tracing it with her finger. “Something to bind us. Not contracts. Not blood. Something I chose.”
Valerius leaned over her shoulder, gaze sharp. “Sugar, indeed,” he murmured, and for once, his voice carried no mockery. Only something deeper.
They sat side by side as the artist worked. Chloe winced at the sting but smiled through it, refusing to look away. Valerius, of course, didn’t flinch. His crimson eyes stayed locked on her face, as if the bite of the needle didn’t exist.
