Grace's Pov “The cops are on their way, let's go,” I heard, and their footsteps started to fade away. After waiting for some minutes and hearing nothing, I released a breath and looked down at the stranger. What did he do to have those men after him? I looked at his features closely and took note of his pink lips, sharp jawline, which looked like it would cut me if I touched it, and I was tempted to. My eyes fell on his wound on his lower abdomen, which was bleeding, and I pressed hard on it to stop the bleeding.

Water glistened under the half-lit sky, reflecting the crimson hue of distant lights from the city skyline. The River Street warehouse loomed like a shadowed relic of a forgotten era—rusted metal, cracked glass, and the faint hum of danger in the air. Basslines thumped behind shut doors. Stacey and Luke let the city take them in. They moved like regulars who’d replaced the word afraid with hungry a long time ago. Peak Street was a watershed area that did not fall under any of the Drunham City council's reign, and thus, it had developed into a rowdy, lawless area quite out of the government's control. Neon lights twinkled at Liam from all directions, and there were throes of raunchy women dressed in skimpy clothing standing on either side of the street. Groups of teenagers and gangsters stumbled out of pubs, most of them inebriated and flirted incessantly with the streetwalkers waiting for them. The moment Liam got out of the car, one of the women caught sight of him and approached him with a knowing smile. "Hey there, handsome. First time here? Up for some fun tonight?"

The Town Street — Sirens and Snow Blue and red lights washed over the snow like war paint. Police cars skidded to a stop in a sharp, screeching arc, doors flying open. Officers spilled out, guns raised, shouting over one another. “ON THE GROUND—NOW!” “STEP AWAY FROM HIM!” “DO NOT MOVE!” Lena flinched, still half in Alexander’s arms. The lights were too bright. The voices too loud. Every heartbeat in the area pulsed inside her skull like a drum.

I am trembling and trying to remember any useful information Roxy might have given me about the street of the damned, but my mind is blank. Shit! We're fucked. A man with a heavily built body stands in front of me and clears his throat. "This is the street of the damned and you're not welcome here. Who sent you?" he bellows. The street where we were seemed deserted, even in New York, the city that never sleeps. "We can't hitchhike," I suggested. "I'm not getting into a stranger's car, Emma. I'm a mafioso, wanted. What if this was a setup? What if they punctured the tire?"

Ember, on the other hand, was unsettled, delicately massaging Kali’s fingers as she turned to her mother to answer on Kali’s behalf. “In a convenience store.
