Chapter 1 “You found me. Congratulations. Now tell me whether you came to discuss literature or whether you came to be told what to do.” Sera Quinn spoke from the doorway of her apartment without inviting him in. Dorian Hale stood in the hall holding a worn paperback of her first book, the spine broken from repeated reading. He had spent two years tracking the anonymous author behind the work. He had not expected the woman who opened the door to look so ordinary or to sound so unsurprised.

Adam’s voice cuts into my calm. “I looked up the author name you told me, but it didn’t return any hits.” I tense, my anxiety climbing again. “That’s strange.” “You said Daphne Thompson, right?” “Uh… yeah.” “Well, there’s no author by that name. There’s a Daphne Thomas, though.” “Oh.” “Miss Thomas writes some… ah… interesting stories.” He smiles. “Critics call her books ‘mommy porn.’” My stomach tight, I struggle to find a response but fail. Adam continues talking, his voice suspiciously light.

She couldn't speak and her body felt numb. Daphne cleared her throat and touched her glasses briefly. The brief look in her eyes seemed as if she had just realized something important. "Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself," Daphne said, exhaling. "I'm Daphne Billings Morales. I'm Garrett's grandmother." Elice could not breathe. Even her soul felt as if it had been forcibly separated from her body. "I-I—" "I know exactly who you are," Daphne interrupted. "Elice McLean. I think a couple of articles that came out this morning are more than enough to explain who you are."
