He handed Christian one of the cups and Christian took a sip. “It’s cocoa!” Christian yelled, excited. Renee smiled. She took a sip of hers. It was really good cocoa. Jesse had made it a little sweeter than it needed to be, but that was the way she liked it. She smiled at him. He smiled back. She wondered if he had thought about her honeymoon proposal. He hadn’t mentioned it afterward. She hadn’t wanted to push.

Damon said, leaning back on his elbows, “are we winning the ‘best day ever’ competition yet?” Max looked up from his rock tower and beamed, that gap in his teeth on prominent display. “Maybe if we can have dessert.” Damon laughed and reached into the picnic basket. “You drive a hard bargain, kid.” He pulled out a container of chocolate chip cookies, and Max’s face lit up. “Now it’s the best day,” he said, abandoning his rocks to grab a cookie. Jane stirred at the mention of dessert. “Cookie?” she slurred. Chuckling, I smoothed her hair back from her forehead. “Yes, love. Uncle Damon brought cookies.”

I shot back. Leon stepped closer, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “You think she’ll choose you over the rest of us? You’re living in a fantasy. The darkness will become her, and as I force it on her, it will be intoxicating. I’ll make her want it. And when she does, it won’t be you she turns to. It’ll be me.”

“I’ll have a decaf, thanks.” Dean nodded, moving behind the counter to prepare it. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, but it did little to soothe the unease bubbling beneath my skin. I could feel Claire’s eyes on me, studying me, maybe even trying to piece together what I was doing in her small diner in the middle of nowhere, pregnant and on the run. The thought that Rowan's scouts could already be here, hiding in plain sight, waiting to pounce, made my skin crawl. I kept glancing at the door, my fingers twitching against the countertop. Each passing second felt too long, too exposed.

The flavors were a bit odd, but I wasn’t afraid to try new things. My fingers skated over the pint of Rhubarb & Ginger Crumble to a container of Caramel Sticky Toffee Pudding. They lingered there for a few seconds as my eyes darted over to one labeled Death by Chocolate. More than once I’ve seen Damon sneaking his way down here to grab some in the middle of the night. He was addicted to the stuff. I would’ve expected it from Knight, but not Damon. I could feel Caius’s eyes on me. Everything about the man was so damn consuming. Even his stare felt like its own physical presence.

Something beautiful, subtle, unyielding. After hanging up, I opened a browser tab and typed in the number from memory—Trésor Cacao, her favorite chocolate place. She used to sneak out of dorms to buy their truffles, swearing Madame Eloïse made them with some kind of magic. A woman answered in her soft French-laced tone. “Bonjour, Trésor Cacao.” “It’s Damien von Adler. I’d like to send an order house truffles, please. Champagne ganache and dark cherry.”

My heart still races from the exhilaration of the fight, pounding against my chest as I watch Octavia flee. From me. I watch her wolf disappear beneath the overgrown brush, the ebony fur rippling as she ran. Her little pet shoots me a dark look, baring his teeth before bounding after her. He shifts mid-air, his lithe fox form slipping beneath the brush. I let them go. Dominic would be hot on their heels soon enough. And where else would they go? They had nowhere to run where I couldn’t find them.
