Dark of Night Copyright 2019 Emily Goodwin Chapter One “What do you see when you look at this one?” The doctor holds up a card, showcasing an ink splotch that’s twisted and creepy, with eyes that follow you no matter where you go. I look at it, heart hammering away inside my chest. The mess of ink on the white paper reminds me of the monster that lurks in Nana and Papa’s basement, the one that tried to get Abby and Scott to go downstairs with it.

"You’re still just the girl who cried when I touched her neck. You’re still just the mistake I didn't bother to kill." He straightened up and looked out at the ten thousand, his eyes full of a sickening, dark light. "Welcome back, Kaima," Damon said, his voice rising in a shout that made the survivors flinch. "I was wondering when the trash would finally find its way back to the bin. I hope you're ready to be burned, because I have a very large furnace waiting for all of you." He raised his hand, and the dark energy around him erupted into a pillar of black fire that reached toward the sky, turning the moonlight into a bruised, sickly purple.

I cut in. “What do you mean?” Delsanra asks. “The key lies within the darkness. What if that is literally the answer? Judah got in. He is a fucking evil bastard. Maybe it’s those who have darkness within them who can open this shit?” I say, each passing moment feeling like years. It was like staring at the black heavens, a soul divine, one brighter than any star of the night sky. In the sea of their blackness, there was a coldness, when there is no love within them. All Harlow could see was a deadness within them. 'Who was this guy?' He looked so familiar, like she had seen him before but couldn't figure out where, she wasn't able to put a finger on it.
