The Replacement Wife
Chen has taken the plates and before anyone has suggested moving, he begins to say it out loud.
"Helena is twelve weeks old," he says.
"Thirteen, as of yesterday," I say.
"Thirteen weeks." He picks up his water glass. Put it down. "The twins are eight weeks old. So Helena will be around eight and a half months when they arrive, assuming a full-term delivery, which with twins is typically thirty-seven weeks rather than forty."
"Dr. Reyes said thirty-six to thirty-eight," I say. "Monitoring will start in twenty weeks."
