Once upon a time in Sinadol there lived a certain king who had three daughters. The fairest and best of these was Kwan-yin, the youngest. The old king was justly proud of this daughter, for of all the women who had ever lived in the palace she was by far the most attractive. It did not take him long, therefore, to decide that she should be the heir to his throne, and her husband ruler of his kingdom. But, strange to say, Kwan-yin was not pleased at this good fortune. She cared little for the pomp and splendor of court life. She foresaw no pleasure for herself in ruling as a queen, but even feared that in so high a station she might feel out of place and unhappy.

I lashed, crossing my arms over my chest. “But you are Ameena, my daughter.” His right hand moved up and gestured for the prince. “This is your older brother, Jareth. You are the crown princess of Foressa, one of the fou—five kingdoms of this realm.” He stressed the word five. I noticed it and also the momentary show of disgust on his face. “Your features, your actions, your character, your essence are without question.” I held my breath. Right about now, I was supposed to burst into a belly-aching laugh because of his outrageous claim, but the seriousness of their faces stopped me from doing so.

I close my eyes, a smile glides over my lips. The queen has finally found herself a kingdom. And this kingdom has a name: the Court of Queens.

I reluctantly tore my eyes away from Viktor’s, facing the crowd of people who came today. I could make out August Halifax’s mop of red hair, stylishly parted to the side. A smile formed on his face as we locked eyes, his Dad standing by his side. I wasn’t surprised to see Annalise Halifax missing, August had her on a tight leash after what had happened. August had kept in touch, giving me detailed updates on everything happening in his Kingdom. He was finally able to take the throne, his Dad proud at his side. “As kindhearted, brave, and strong as her Mother.” Dad continued, making my heart flutter from the praise. “My daughter will usher in a new era as the first Alpha Queen.”

“If I do this… I go as the Kingdom’s envoy. Not as his wife. Not as the omega he remembers. And if he—or anyone—stands in my way…” My father’s eyes gleamed with fierce pride. “Then you remind them who you are.” I exhaled slowly, the decision settling like armor around my heart. “I’ll go.” He rested a gentle hand on my shoulder. “That’s my daughter. That’s my Queen.” I didn’t smile. In the silence that followed my father’s words, I stared out the window—at the kingdom stretching below us—my home, my blood, my responsibility.

Close enough to strike. I moved in silence, just another girl with a tray and bowed shoulders. But under the fabric of my borrowed clothes, the heat under my skin stirred. I could feel it thrumming through my veins, always there, always waiting. My father used to call it my ember heart. My mother said it would one day make me a queen. But they were both dead now.
