See, why assume the worst? Around noon, Clara returns, and I learn that we have an assignment due tomorrow. I must have missed Mr. Lawrence mentioning it last week, probably because I tend to zone out when I'm bored. It's a skill that has its pros and cons. I reluctantly make my way to the library, where I'll spend hours researching on my day off. Yay, life! In the library, I head toward the history section but end up bumping into someone while juggling my backpack and books. My books tumble to the floor.

Mom already had the slip of paper in her hand and was looking over the books, trying to find the right section. "There 7." I pointed behind her, running towards the section. The library was my safe haven. Whenever I missed dad, or was in a sad mood I would come here, grab a book and a chair and just sit in the corner, reading the book and drifting into another world of imagination. So it wasn't a surprise that I knew the sections by heart. "Row 4." I whispered to myself. "And book 19." Counting the numbers in my mind I stopped my finger on the 19th book. I could make out only one car outside but none of them was in sight. Okay...time to panic again. They left me. They freaking left me. How could they? How will I get out of here? Tomorrow is Saturday, the library will be closed for another two days. OH MY GOD, I won't be stuck here for two days, would I? I mean, they would notice that they forgot me here, wouldn't they? Jesus, do I have the best friends ever or what? I waited by the door for a couple of minutes before I decided to walk back into the library, maybe it'll be less colder in there.

This was the third book from a series she had found very interesting and she couldn’t wait for it to be four o’clock and get home. Afternoons were fairly dull and quiet in the library with its dwindling membership, and Doris almost gave in to the temptation of undoing the package and taking a sneak peek. But she controlled herself; it would be time to leave soon. Hamby wouldn’t be back until the next day, and the other librarians usually left a half hour before time, leaving her, the humble assistant, to do the closing up. Well, today she would close up as soon as they left and be home before four.
