Willow Baker POV Days Later Everything was a blur. The days all blended together, but I couldn't bring myself to care. All I could think about was how everyone was gone. The Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess, Sheila, and Rickey were all gone. Every time I thought about them, I would feel the tears come back, but it had been slowly happening less and less. It was like my tears were drying up, leaving only numbness behind. I couldn't even bring myself to get any work done, even though it had been piling up. All my energy was spent caring for Asa and lying in bed. If Asa didn't need me, then I didn't have the strength to move.

June The half of the day passes like it always does, measured in drills, instructions, and the constant awareness that today is not like other days. There is something heavier sitting under everything. A tension that no one says out loud but everyone feels anyway. By the end of today, some recruits will be sent back. No second chances. No long explanations. Just gone. I can see it in the way people move. The way they talk a little less. The way they keep checking the instructors’ faces like answers might appear there if they stare long enough.
