Winter left without making any announcement.
One morning the snow was just thinner than before, the edges of things softening, and the season was simply over. We had used every day of its bodies and hands and hours spent in easy company, fixing what was broken on the truck, standing together at the canvas until the light changed. After dark we read to each other or played cards at the kitchen table with the fire going low.
