Dad died quietly. But I knew he'd gone with things left unfinished. Regret that he hadn't seen me happy. Regret that he hadn't kept me safe. Before he died, he'd put my hand in Vivien's. His hand had been cold. Thin. Bone digging into my palm. He'd said, "You're sisters. Family is everything." He didn't know. Some family had stopped being family a long time ago. At the funeral, Vivien cried louder than anyone.

“We’re glad you’re here. We’ve been expecting you. The family to receive the official death notice is over there.” He points, and I follow his hand and see them. They were a small group, huddled together on the chairs in the waiting area. Their faces were buried in trembling hands with their shoulders shaking. They’re already sobbing. Whoever’s name is on that paper meant the world to them. I glance down at the notice and read it silently: Celine Cruger. When I look back at the family, my heart aches. “Death,” I murmur with a low and bitter voice, “always arrives like it’s been patiently waiting outside the door… then walks in without knocking.”

"Start making arrangements for Emma." Mom rushed at him, hands reaching for my arm. "No, she's still warm, feel her ear, there's still warmth there. Dad, give her to me, let me hold her for a while, just warming her up will—" Grandpa turned half a step aside and didn't let her touch me. "Get a hold of yourself." He looked at her. "You locked her in that cellar and she died there. What exactly is this supposed to be for?" Mom's legs gave out. She sank to the floor.

"You and your family have truly suffered a horrible death, Fred—an entire family gone just like that, without even leaving a descendant behind!" I stared blankly at the scene as a sudden burst of wailing echoed in my ears. I noticed three coffins lined up neatly before me, holding the bodies of Wendy Lowe, Fred Lancaster, and Draco Lancaster—Mom, Dad, and my younger brother. Those who were mourning so passionately were Shawn Lancaster and Olivia Smith—my uncle and aunt from the countryside.

I opened my eyes fully and looked down at the sweet child peeking sleepily up at me. "You hurted my daddy," Miguel mumbled in confusion. My heart dropped and I shook my head. I wasn't completely responsible for their deaths. I mean their father died in the stupid Iraq war and their blonde haired mother hung herself after getting the news. I dealt with death but not the way the individual died, that was solely on those fate bitches. "This is bullshit, let's go, don't ever forget about me little man, we will meet again in the future, this I swear," I growled. I moved him off me, patting his head sweetly and hurried past Maria cursing me while holding a cross up at me.

When Ryan saw that I still refused to speak, he pressed his fingers to his temples and sighed. “You should know that if you say nothing, you’ll only end up receiving the death penalty. “But if you had a reason…” He trailed off in a sigh. But there was something I knew for sure. I killed my family, the people who loved me. Any reason I gave would not be able to save me. In our silence, someone knocked on the door. Ryan got up and went out. Before he closed the door, I caught the sound of furious scolding. When I heard the fleeting voice, my lips turned up at the corners.

“Then choose quickly. The curse won’t wait.” Inside, arguments rose again as the storm outside broke open with rain. The family was on the edge of collapse, debts looming, enemies circling, curses tightening. Yet in the middle of it all, Gail opened her notebook again, writing furiously, her words spilling like the rain: This family is not cursed. We are only human. Broken, but still breathing. And while we breathe, we fight. Her pen scratched on, even as the walls shook with thunder. The gathering storm was only beginning.
