A sound like a thousand screaming souls echoed through the air. "What is that?" I asked, a new kind of dread filling my chest. Rowan’s face went white. "The Northern Gate... it doesn't hold wolves, Kaima. It holds the things that hunted us before the moon was born." From the black smoke, a shape began to emerge. It was miles high, with a thousand wings and eyes that looked like dying stars. "The Soul-Eaters are coming," the Grand Alpha whispered before his head finally slumped forward. I looked at Rowan. I looked at my tired, broken army. We had just won a war, but the world was ending.

“The final seal has shattered. The Void walks again.” Scene 2: The Arrival of the God-Eater The clearing around them split. A deep fissure tore through the ground, releasing a foul stench like rotting dreams. Out from the chasm crawled creatures of pure shadow—limbs too long, eyes like hollow pits, mouths filled with smoke and teeth made of silence. Echoes. Iris tightened her grip on the blade. “They’re not real,” Aiden growled. “They are,” the boy corrected. “But they have no soul. Only hunger.”

Soul Extraction Soul Extraction was an ability that was not best explained by its title. Rather than extracting the soul of a target, what Soul Extraction did was to allow an Asura to inherit the power and will of those they killed. The person didn’t have to be fully dead either; as long as their hearts were crushed, the Asura would inherit everything. Some speculated that this was the reason why Asuras were generally insane, for it was no easy feat to see the lives and heart of every person one killed and still be normal.

The new hunter was an entity codenamed the "Soul-Eater," a non-corporeal mind-thief who could steal and consume memories as easily as a common pickpocket lifts a wallet. Its goal was brutally clear: extract the location of the Obsidian Lab and the nature of Jack’s debilitating curse from the minds of his inner circle. "We can't track it," Aaliyah said, her voice laced with a despairing frustration. "There's no energy signature, no physical presence, nothing to lock onto. It's a ghost in the machine of the mind."

We must find her a soul from the cemetery of her ancestors. Rosemary is a soul eater, once she's fed on one soul. She will need a new one in a year or two. Who's to say she won't come searching for Lucia in a year's time with another request. On and on this could go, an endless cycle on repeat. I am not convinced a soul eater, like Rosemary, can ever truly be put to rest. Her body is in the ground, but her spirit fills the earth with nightmares, tormenting the dreams of men.

After all, now that they had passed on in peace, they wouldn’t end up turning into evil spirits… Either way, now that they were gone, Gerald drew the Astrabyss Sword before starting to mutter some odd incantations… The spell Gerald was chanting was known as Soul Eater, and casting it enabled him to completely exterminate villainous spirits. As Gerald had earlier said, any spirits caught within the punishing spell wouldn’t be able to be reincarnated… While Gerald rarely used the spell, he knew he had to use it on the dead Soul Hunters. After all, they deserved this punishment, and Gerald wasn’t about to let them die in peace and escape judgment.

"Maybe some part of him knew you still." I opened my mouth and stopped. What was the point in telling her that a Taken's soul was forced from its body? That there was no way that Stan would've known who she was? But his actions had gone against every tactical rule he'd taught... Could Lillith be wrong? Most of what we knew were pure assumptions on our part... So maybe the souls she saw weren't completely severed. Maybe they were just stuck in some kind of limbo whilst they waited for their bodies to die?

It was time to focus, and he had the opportunity to interrogate a possible Fisheri—a member of an extinct alien species. His blood warmed as he wondered over their evolution. Were the earth-born sirens also deadly predators, like their predecessors? And would they want to return to their water world?

And there would be no sacrifice. But he only wins when my heart is no longer beating.”
