It was slow, patient, and still. Footsteps came from the far end of the hall. They were steady, confident, the sound of someone who knew exactly where they were going. The doctor stopped in front of me, holding a clipboard in one hand. His glasses were sliding down the bridge of his nose, and there was a deep crease between his brows from too many hours without rest. “Mr. De Luca,” he began, his voice low but clear. “Your cousin’s condition is stable. He is a tough young man, but he has been through hell.”

I choked on my tears when the doctor came in with Declan behind him. "Please step back," the doctor said, as he brought out his stethoscope to test Dame.
