Dante held me as if I might vanish, but I no longer had the strength to push him away. Professor Shaw came to my side. “Aria, can you hear me?” I looked at her through the blur. “My baby…” Her expression changed, but her voice stayed steady. “We’re taking you to the institute medical center now.” As they lifted me onto the stretcher, Dante tried to follow. Professor Shaw stopped him with one look. “You had your chance to protect her.” The last thing I saw before darkness took me was Dante standing in the hall, covered in my blood, while the wedding ring box lay open at his feet.

He had to play it cool. "I am assessing the patient's viability," he said, his voice a smooth, professional mask. "Aaron! I knew you wouldn't abandon me!" Lexi threw her arms around his neck in a brief, desperate embrace. She felt invincible. She turned to Cameron, her eyes shining. "See? I told you. Aaron has always looked out for his own. He’s going to save Naomi." Cameron didn't move. He was staring at Aaron with a look of profound shock. "Is he your brother?"

The way he had chosen her over me when I couldn’t give him an heir. I wiped my eyes quickly before Alexander finished his call. He noticed something was off when he returned. “Vivian, what’s wrong?” he asked, wheeling over. “You look upset.” I hesitated, then decided to share part of it. “Memories from the past came back today. David. The way things ended. It’s hard sometimes.” He pulled me gently onto his lap in the wheelchair. His arms wrapped around me. “You’re safe here. He can’t hurt you anymore. If he tries anything, tell me. I’ll handle it.”

Probably some office promotion stuffs or something else I don't want to care about. My reputation and fame getting destroyed was already overwhelming me. Then suddenly, I heard Aaron's name. I paused immediately bending my head a bit down the rail to hear better. My Dad was talking about the board meeting they had this morning. His tone was serious. Then he said something shocking... "Aaron Briggs is officially the successor now." Oh my God. Aaron is the heir. For a moment I couldn't process it. I turned around and quickly approached my parents. "Dad. What did you just say?" I asked as I shouted.

The elevator pings and we step out. “Aaron was a new man, devoted to his wife and child, his glory days long forgotten. Lorelei wasn’t shown off as the next Barsamian heiress, however, and her life journey was kept secret, until her parents were killed in a car crash where a drunk driver hit them head-on. Aaron and Trinity were pronounced dead at the scene.”

As if he were destined to be a leader in this scary, perilous world. However, Susann shook her head. “That is precisely what Howard desired. Aaron was pushed to the point where he was forced to become this version of himself. Howard would have destroyed him if he hadn't. . . .” Marie whispered, “But he’s still in it. He is still alive and well.” With a hint of frustration in her voice, Susann yelled, “Because he has no choice! Would Howard ever allow Aaron to leave? Do you think he could just walk away?”

As far as my parents go, they would have figured it out eventually, so why not get everything out in the open now? I don't know how I feel about Aaron at this point. I've been his only family besides the bureau for the last ten years and the last five years; he has treated me like gum you find stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Aaron's whole family, his parent's and four younger siblings died from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home when Aaron was 25 and away at college. He has no surviving family to this day. I suppose I'll be the one the hospital will call soon since I am most likely still his emergency contact.

I was reminded of something else Christian had said—that he couldn’t die. “What about the rest of us?” Aurora asked. “I already know the rest of you can, potentially, but if I’ve got someone who can’t be killed, I’ll play my cards a little differently than if we’re all doomed.” Aaron’s answer made sense on the surface, but I was still thinking there was more to it than that. “Does that mean you think Daunator might be able to kill us?” Hannah meant Guardians, I thought. It was obvious Daunator could kill Hunters, and no one knew if anything could kill me or not.

“It’s not as bad as you think it is. Hyde’s already healing me as we speak.” My legs soon leading me in the direction of the bed. My eyes never once leaving his. Our eyes still on the other even as I move to sit carefully upon the bed. Neither of us speaking. Neither of us moving. Aaron soon being the one to speak up. “I’m not fragile. I’m a survivor. I endure.” His words quick to echo within my mind even as I move to finally speak. “You idiot. This isn’t about being fragile or enduring anything. This is about you living for those who love you. People like Jake, Zak and Tori.”
