I knew that, but I just couldn’t pinpoint what it was. Staring out the window at the row of shabby and ill-kept homes, I went over my life in my mind. My childhood was something that I considered normal. I had no recollection of being taken from my birth parents and transported into the future to my new parents. College was so normal as to be considered dull. The fact that my life was so blatantly average was actually the reason I became a private investigator. It seemed exciting and full of peril. I thought that it was until I met Lance and developed a new definition for peril.

And she, for one, wanted no part in stealing such a mysterious grimoire to fulfill such stupidity. Jess noticed another detective trailing behind the woman, a man she guessed to be in his fifties. There was something familiar about him, a figure she had seen before but never interacted with. He was the head detective, renowned for his remarkable investigative skills. Though Jess knew little of the man, one thing was clear—she needed to keep her distance. Still, her curiosity held her gaze on them, unwilling to let go of the scene unfolding before her.

"Hey, that's not fair . You know I have to drink blood …I am a vampire and that just comes with the package. Actually…no! I no longer want to argue about your wine , the two of you will just gang up on me like usual so drink and have fun. She scribbles something down before handing it back to me. Stranger stalker I laugh at her note about the detective, but I’m impressed. “Okay, but is a private investigator or detective really dark enough?” She shrugs. “Depends. What are they following? How much of their life is hidden in the shadows?”

Their thoughts are consumed by the images that have taken root, a symphony of colors and shapes that defy logic. The call of curiosity is too strong to resist, and they find themselves drawn into a quest that transcends the boundaries of their everyday life.

His gaze moved over me slowly — from my slightly unsteady walk, to the high collar of my blouse that I’d chosen to hide the marks, to the way I couldn’t quite meet his eyes. “Something’s different tonight,” he said. His voice was calm, but there was an edge beneath it. I swallowed. “I’m just… tired.” He stepped closer. One hand reached out and gently tilted my chin up. His thumb brushed over a spot on my neck where Rafael had sucked particularly hard. “You’re marked,” he said flatly. My heart slammed against my ribs. Damien’s eyes darkened. He unbuttoned the top two buttons of my blouse without asking, exposing the cluster of faint purple marks on my collarbone and the swell of my breast.
