Diane began slowly, “some people don’t need to say much to make you feel… small?”
I looked at her. “Yes.”
She nodded. “Yeah. Same.”
We moved to the shallow end, sitting on the steps with the water lapping around us. Diane picked at the edge of her nail polish.
“I think he watches you,” she said quietly.
My heart skipped. “Who?”
“Lucian.”
I stiffened. “You’re imagining things.”
“Maybe,” Diane said easily. “But I don’t think so.”
Neither did I.
The sun was dipping lower when I went back inside, hair still damp, skin warm from chlorine and heat.
