The blue light of its solar core flickered, then streamed out of the chassis like water, flowing through the air and into Valen’s outstretched hand.
"Abort," I said, standing up. "Cut the power."
"I can't," the corporal said, his hands flying over the console. "He’s locked it. He’s draining the battery dry."
On the screen, the drone turned grey, then crumbled into dust, its structural integrity compromised by the sheer loss of energy. Valen stood amidst the falling debris, breathing hard, his hands glowing with stolen blue light.
He looked up at the camera hidden in the trees. He smiled. It was a jagged, triumphant smile that made my heart stop.
