I put on a robe and pick up a book at random before going out to the backyard patio. As I stand outside looking at the gray sky, I wonder what is in store for me. Light abounds, yet I can see nothing except the darkness. The fresh air soothes me. I’ve always liked rainy and windy weather. I took the back and went to the kitchen to ask the scholar some questions. “Do you know how to read these?” I asked him excitedly. It was a new thing. “Why all out of sudden today?” Empress asked her a half-question, but the Diva seemed to understand it fully. She shook her head here and there as if trying to express her getting bored replying back,

“Doing something wrong for the right reasons.” He studied me like he could see through my bones. “The world isn’t divided into good choices and bad ones,” he said. “It’s divided into the choices you survive… and the ones you don’t.” “That’s confusing,” I said with a smirk. “It’s clear.”He turned slightly, his knee brushing mine. Just a touch—but it sent heat spiraling through me. He didn’t move away. “Sometimes the only way out of a maze is to stop searching for the exit,” he murmured, “and just feel the walls.”

She cleared her throat, over-enunciating as though performing Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre. “Love isn’t patient, love isn’t kind… it’s fire, and it burns everything it touches.” She looked at me expectantly, starry-eyed. I wanted to slide under the table and melt into the floor. Was this real life?
