Moonlight hits his face, bathing it in sliver light, further accenting his hair that is not black.
"You're not okay, are you?" I ask lowly. I sound almost mad. But in reality, I'm just worried.
"Handerville hasn't changed much since I last came here. Still good people around," says dad. Off-topic. My face scrunches up a little when he doesn't answer my question. I'm just opening my mouth to speak when he says it.
"I have cancer, Cayce."
The already still air seems to freeze over. And even the wind seems to stop, and turn to look at Dad, not trusting its own ears. I stand for a moment in shock, unable to believe mine.
