"She didn't." She had known, on some level, that this was what she would find. She had known it from the moment Dr. Weiss said ask yourself why he kept it, in the same way you sometimes know the ending of a story before the last page because the whole shape of it has been pointing there from the beginning. Knowing did not make the arrival of it any easier.

“Something aware.” The word lingered. Uncomfortable. Unnatural. Kael’s expression darkened slightly. “That matches the stories.” Her stomach tightened. “I don’t want to be part of those stories.” “You already are.” That hit hard. She turned to face him fully now. “Then tell me how they end.” Silence. A long one. Then— “They don’t,” he said. Her breath caught. “What?” “They don’t end well.” The honesty hit like a blade. Sharp.

"I'm a writer. Everyone I love ends up at work. I'm sorry." "Don't apologize." "I know. You told me." "I'll keep telling you." She looked at him. "The ending," she said. "It's not — it's not about the man. I want you to know that. He's in it, he matters, but the ending is hers. Clare's." She paused. "It's about what she kept that was always hers. Not what someone gave her." He held her gaze. "I know," he said. "I could tell."

And when the ending finally came—when it paid off, when it was worth it—she looked over at him. He was watching her, not the screen. “What,” she said. “You didn't skip.” “I'm learning.” He almost smiled. Almost. Later that night, she explained it to him. Not as a defense—just as a fact. “I'm not skipping because I don't respect the story,” she said. “I'm skipping because I need to know if the ending is worth waiting for. If it's not, I'd rather know sooner.” He was quiet for a moment. Then: “And if it is?”

And she knew, deep down, that she was right. Something was coming. The "happy ending" wasn't the end of the book. It was just the end of the chapter. And the next page... the next page was blank. And terrifying.

I knew the fires had already started and this would be her only chance. “Guards to me! Help burn these tents.” My men instantly obeyed and she ran. My heart leapt for her. For her joy, for her freedom, and because I would never get to know who she was. But then she stopped. I saw the lines of my men hiding in the woods march out and I knew she wouldn’t be able to escape.

"I'm impressed." "I want all of you, forever, you and me, everyday." He said, his voice blending with the cold quiet night. "The Notebook." I smiled and nodded. "God, I love that book." "As do I." He smiled back at me. "Okay, um," I pondered. "True love stories never have endings." He thought for a while, "I don't think I know that one." "Richard Bach." I informed him. "Smart guy." He smirked. "Couldn't agree more with him."

Somewhere in the theater the movie reached its dramatic climax, music crashing loudly through the speakers. I barely noticed. I was too consumed by her. Her lips were warm and soft against mine, and for a moment the noise of the theater faded into the background. When I pulled back, she stared at me. “You just made me miss the entire ending.” I glanced casually at the screen and smirked. “They’ll reconcile.” “How do you know?” “They always do.” I stood, offering her my hand.“Come on.” “Where are we going?” she squeaked in alarm but her eyes held that familiar spark of curiosity.
