The first was my rib, the second was my shoulder. I was fighting it as much as I could. If I change without permission, the punishments that I endure are unlike anything else. They have this purple liquid, and when they inject it into me, it’s like I am burning from the inside out. It's the worst punishment by far.

But beneath the table, the reality was entirely different. The leather upholstery of the dining chair was firm, and every time I shifted my weight even a fraction, a sharp, blinding spike of pain shot straight up my spine. My skin was raw, the cool medicinal cream he had applied having long since soaked in, leaving behind a hyper-sensitive burn. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted copper, desperately clamping my jaw shut to prevent a breathless whimper from escaping my lips.

I descended the last few steps and approached the island. He pulled out a stool for me, his hand hovering near my waist until I was seated. The smell of the arrabbiata was intoxicating, bright, spicy, and rich. "Eat," he said, hovering over me for a second before taking his own seat. "I put extra chili in. I want to see if you can handle the heat, or if you're just as soft as the tabloids say." I took a bite, the spice hitting the back of my throat instantly. It was searing, painful, and incredible. It forced me to be present. It forced me to feel something other than the hollow ache in my ribs.

Cassandra’s POV The noodle bowl was spicy. It was so hot that my eyes were tearing up on the spot. I was tempted to cry but I forced myself to swallow before glancing at Alaric He was pretty calm, I wondered if he could bear the spice. I just wanted him to give up first then I could laugh at him. So despite my burning mouth, or teary eyes and the fact I could feel the spice on my face I took another bite with the chopstick

I’m starving. The first bite has kick. With my heritage it’s not hard to eat the spicy chili. It surprises me that the lily-ass gringos can handle it. “Fucking bullshit is what this is,” one of the men shouts. He comes out of his chair and shoves it back so hard, it tumbles across the floor.
