The Alpha's Refusal
Rhys stood framed in the dispensary doorway, flanked by two armed Betas and, impossibly, Alpha Gideon.
Rhys's eyes were flat, lethal, and triumphant. He took in the entire scene in a single, damning glance: the open window, the dead healer, the blood, and me, kneeling over the body, my hands stained with blood from my escape and Maeve's hemorrhage.
Rhys looked from the corpse to me, then slowly back to his stunned grandfather.
"It seems, Grandfather," Rhys stated, his voice a low, cold vibration that promised death, "that your protection only prolonged the inevitable. She left the safety of your chambers and murdered the one witness capable of exposing her true agenda."
