ELYSIA’S POV The room felt colder after he left. Not in a physical sense; the fire still crackled in the hearth, warm and steady. But something had shifted when the door closed behind him. The air felt heavier, emptier. I sat on the edge of the bed, gripping the furs, trying to steady my breathing as I stared at the closed door, as if it might open again at any moment. But it didn’t. He was here. The Alpha King was here—Alpha King Rhaegar. He had caught me just as I was about to collapse.

Refused to be consumed. Outside, on the battlefield, Myrra flipped through a brittle tome she had salvaged from the ruins, her hands trembling. "There has to be a way," she muttered, voice desperate. "The First King, he didn’t just seal Erythos. He severed his connection to the mortal realm. If we can find..." Erythos' voice boomed across the battlefield, silencing her. "Your ancestors were cowards, clinging to an illusion of control. You will share their fate."

~ Rhys ~ A menacing growl erupted through Rhys’ mind, startling him out of sleep. He jolted, pushing off the adjoined living room floor, frowning at the books and parchments stuck to his hands. His large, manly hands. Rhys slowly rose to a seated position, massaging the throbbing sensation at the sides of his head. Was this another dream with the Moon Goddess? Or just one where he was in his original body?

RHYERS Rhyers was in WaterRose’s library, patiently waiting for Sebastian to come down. As he often did. He sat quietly in the blue chair awaiting Sebastian, knowing he always wandered down when he was good and healed. Rhyers had leisurely picked up the book Elsabet had left set open on the counter. He’d picked up reading where she had left off. He was surprised to find it was plump with old-world tales. Some of the characters were very similar to the Forever Knights. Which he found intriguing.

—she checked her watch—"almost four hours. What do you want to do?" "Everything!" Rhysand declared with the absolute certainty of a child who believed four hours was infinite time. "I want to show you my new Lego castle and my paintings from art class and this story I wrote about dinosaurs who are actually dragons in disguise, and Papa said we could make pancakes for breakfast if you came early enough, and—"

“Why would I ever do that?” Rhys’s lips twitch. “You tell me.” He reaches down and picks up one of the books, turning it in his large hands. “The History of Lycan Clans,” he reads aloud. “I don’t recall this being part of your study regimen.” Hope opens her mouth, but before she can speak, I step forward. “It’s mine, Captain.” Rhys turns his head toward me, his sharp eyes raking over me from head to toe. I straighten my spine despite the tremor running through me.

It was like I was being cooked alive and that didn’t sound good even to me. What immediately drew my attention was the wall-sized bookshelf dividing the bedroom and the sitting area. I slipped over to it, fingers trailing across spines like they held secrets. Predictably, it was filled with titles on history, economics, and war strategy. Not a single romance novel in sight. I almost laughed, imagining Rhysand curled up with a cheesy love story or some steamy fantasy novel. He’d probably throw the book across the room after one page. I blushed hard, the image of him striding around naked flashing across my mind.

However, my entire being seems to have melted in the wind when I saw the one in front of me. It was a tall, lean man with pale skin, black hair, and the most startling grey eyes. His irises are the color of diffused storm clouds, and they look just as threatening. When he meets my gaze, a cold chill zaps my spine. It’s Rhysand, and his features keep shifting, changing, but I can still see who and what he is at the core of it all. He looks less monstrous and more handsome this time, but there’s no denying that behind those eyes, there’s nothing. He has no soul, no heart, no sympathy.
