My phone chimed alerting me of a new message. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.” Landon's message read. One of Aunt Bea's dogs I think this was Luna the only female among three, came to lie at my feet and was looking up at me expectantly. She put her head onto my hand, “Oh…” I smiled, scratching its head and ears and with my other hand, I was just about to respond to Landon when Mom called. “Mom, I'm a little busy right now.” Her head poked into the living room seeing me with the canine.

She had returned safely from the depths of the forest, and a surge of determination ignited within her as she prepared to assist her beloved daughter, Aria. Luna, their loyal and spirited canine companion, had been eagerly awaiting Mira’s return. The moment her bright, expressive eyes caught sight of Mira, the dog’s tail wagged furiously, a blur of energy and excitement. She bounded toward Mira, her soft fur glistening in the gentle light, as if to say, “What’s happening? Tell me everything!” Her inquisitive nose twitched, picking up the earthy, wholesome scent of the leaves clutched in Mira’s hand.

They met with mine and he smiled. “Peter, so you’ve decided to visit me?” The rage in my mind turned to confusion. Who was this? He sounded and looked familiar, but how was that possible? “Magnus?” The man let go of Morning’s neck and her naked body slumped the ground. “Is this your dog? I never took you as one to do something like that, but don’t worry she’s still alive. I need her for other purposes.” Magnus said. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was Magnus who stood in front of me, but why did he look so young?

That dog had an uncanny ability to sense when she was already irritated and cling to her like an unwanted child, pushing her further over the edge. Sending him back to his owner by evening felt like the first blessing in her life so far. Sending back a simple thumbs-up emoji, she moved onto the second message. This one was from Logan. [Are you coming over today? Minho’s quite energetic while waiting for you.] The message earned a slight crease of Mirena's brows. Quite energetic was one way to put it. Vindictive menace was another. The Samoyed derived an almost sadistic pleasure from clinging to her despite her protest—seeing her miserable.

Behind them, a massive hound leaped from the top of the flipped sedan, aiming straight for Joanna's throat. "I don't think so!" Jake yelled. He slammed his hands onto the hood of the Beast. Using his metal-manipulation powers, he ripped a jagged sheet of steel right off the flipped car and hurled it through the air like a massive buzzsaw. The metal sheet sliced clean through the leaping dog’s midsection, showering the asphalt in dark, mutated blood.

This guy was definitely an outsider, which meant he was probably up to no good. Dumbo immediately let out a deafening bark, knocked the thief flat with a few swipes of his paws, then dragged him all the way back to Villa 50. He was certain Cola would appreciate the fresh catch. Hearing Dumbo's excited barking, Cola came down from the second floor and easily cleared the ten-foot wall. Nicole, Zeph, and Poppy had gone to the government trading center, so no one was home. The two dogs had a great time with their new catch by the gate. As far as they were concerned, two-legged creatures made excellent toys.

Past him, I see who I assume is his owner, a young man who can’t be more than twenty-something, gesturing for me to throw the frisbee back to him. I pick up the toy and stand as the dog stands up with me. With a practiced flick of my wrist, I send the disc flying straight back to the owner as the dog races off after his toy. With a smile, I use a hand to shield my eyes from the sun and watch the dog leaping and trying to catch the toy every step of the way until the owner catches the disc. The dog leaps into him, bowling him over and sending him to the ground on his backside as I laugh.

Philip was a good man. Madison also has Two-dogs. Not literally two dogs, but one badass rescued pit bull named Two-dogs. He’s three years old and follows Madison everywhere. He was our compromise over the bodyguard situation. Madison hired a woman and I had a dog trained for added protection. We’re both happy.

He chuckles just as he disappears into the front door and I go to grab another box. Just as I lift it up, the door of the house next door swings open. I put the box down and plaster on my warmest smile, hoping to make a good impression on our new neighbor. A tall, thin man with dark blonde hair and blue eyes framed with circular, silver glasses walks out in a t-shirt and jogging shorts with what is arguably the most beautiful dog I've seen in my entire life.

The man who came through it was not Nathan Cole. He was tall — not absurdly so, but enough that she registered it. Dark jacket, slightly damp at the shoulders from the rain. He was holding a very small, very chaotic terrier mix on a leash, and the dog immediately launched itself toward Mara with the unhinged enthusiasm of an animal that had never once in its life experienced disappointment. "Hey — Biscuit, no —" The man pulled back on the leash, barely. "Sorry, she does this. She thinks everyone is here specifically for her."
