Helena said softly. They entered to find Elise sitting up in bed, looking stronger than she had during their last visit. Her color was better, her eyes brighter, and when she saw them, her whole face lit up. "My girls," she said, opening her arms. "Come here." They gathered around her bed, Grace immediately launching into the story of the previous night. Elise listened intently, her expression cycling through fear, pride, and relief as Grace described facing Damien, his arrest, and the confession that would keep him locked away for years.

Inside, Elise was sitting behind her desk, focused on her computer screen. “Alec,” Elise greeted as she stood and extended her hand. Alec shook her hand and sat down. A sense of relief settled in his chest. At least he knew one of the doctors at this hospital. That meant Alec might be able to get some information, though he’d have to be careful about how he asked. They started talking casually, at first about technical medical topics. Eventually, Elise began discussing one of her upcoming cases. “She had surgery less than a year ago, and now she insists on a full facial reconstruction,” Elise complained. “It’s risky. If something goes wrong, my name’s still on the line.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza, the doctor would like to see you both.” Elise’s chest tightened. She didn’t say a word, but Alejandro immediately rose, helping her up. She leaned into his arm as they walked down the quiet corridor toward the consultation room. Inside, the doctor was already seated behind her desk, a small folder in front of her. She looked up when they entered with a gentle expression on her face. The woman exhaled. “Please, sit.” Trying to force out the littlest bit of neutrality on her face. Something cold threaded through Elise’s veins that was instantly noticeable and Alejandro’s hand found hers instinctively.

Ellyse chuckled at what he did. After the game, they all ate at the long table with the other doctors and nurses. She was seated beside Riden who’s busy talking to the other doctors. “By the way, this is my friend Ellyse Kennedy. She’s an architect,” He suddenly introduced her. Ellyse was shocked since she was tone deaf the whole entire time. “A friend? Really doc?” One of his friends teased him. “Seriously, she’s my friend. Right Ellyse?” He turned his head towards her and she smiled before nodding.

As I got closer, I noticed a petite Asian girl standing next to the doorway with two suitcases at her feet. Our most recent maid, Elise, had fled back to her home in Brazil because her mother was in the hospital and very ill. We'd only had her for two years, but I learned a lot from Elise in that time. She was fifteen years my senior in her mid-thirties and knew a little bit about everything. She was very intelligent and a great conversationalist. It never developed to more than that, however.
