Her mom called out from downstairs, at the foot of the wooden stairs. Elise Helmrick was turning sixteen this summer. “I know you wouldn’t, Serena. Don’t listen to her.” Elise’s laugh, high and hard, made my nerves sharp. “Oh, please. You can’t see past her, Derrick. She’s got you right in the palms of her hands, playing the victim while teaming up with Rhys. I have proof.” Her eyes gleamed with victory as she pulled a folded note from her pocket. “A message, which one of Rhys’s scouts intercepted. It refers to a girl in your pack, someone giving him information. Who else could it be?”

Her grip tightens on her coat. “She’s quite young for a Personal Assistant to you, John, isn’t she?” Elise steps forward, the cape shifting, exposing bare skin underneath. She revealed her naked skin purposely. Just that act alone is like saying a silent, yet unspoken ‘this is what I am to him. What are you?’ Ingrid swallows. I watch her throat move. She’s measuring her response. “Eighteen,” she says finally. Elise hums, dragging the silence between them like a blade across glass. “Eighteen.” She glances at me. “Your Personal Assistant?”

Before anyone could say more, Peggy—Elise’s five-year-old whirlwind—burst into the room, pigtails bouncing. Her eyes widened at the sight of the twins, and she squealed so high-pitched that Kaelan blinked like she’d just set off an alarm. “Ohhh, they’re so tiny!” she gasped, rushing over. “Can I hold them?
