The dirt on the floor seeped through my clothes, and as I scrambled to push myself up, my arms shook uselessly. The vampire’s shadow fell over me. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for my inevitable end that came sooner than I had envisioned. I was waiting for claws to tear into my back or his fangs to sink into my neck and rip it into pieces. This wasn’t the first time I had such a dream. It had become a nightmare that constantly haunted me whenever I felt unsettled, but this version was different. I gazed at my reflection, my eyes sunken and haunted. But as I splashed my face, the dream persisted in my mind. Clara's lifeless body haunted me. At first, she couldn’t remember exactly what she had been dreaming about, but she knew she had been sprinting in her dream, and her chest heaved as if she had been truly attempting to outrun a predator. She wiped her brow on the sleeve of her flannel pajamas, and after a moment to compose herself, turned to her nightstand and a drink of water. Whatever she had been dreaming, it was terrible, and she was afraid to go back to sleep. She glanced at the clock next to her bed. It was 3:00 AM. She felt chills climbing up her spine as she realized at this time tomorrow, she would be at the Eidolon Festival. Suddenly, she remembered, she had been dreaming about attending the fair. The laughter was as haunting as the sick glint of excitement that danced in their eyes as they watched the blood drip from my wounds.
