A lot of western progression fantasy leans heavily into the martial side, treating immortality as a far-off goal or a power-up. But the novels that nail the true fusion, where the pursuit of eternal life and combat mastery are woven into the same philosophical cloth, tend to be from the xianxia and xuanhuan traditions. The problem is finding ones where the techniques feel interdependent, not just two separate skill trees you level up.

Take 'I Shall Seal the Heavens'. It's almost a classic for this. Meng Hao’s path isn’t just about getting stronger to fight; every breakthrough, every new realm he unlocks, extends his lifespan and deepens his understanding of the Dao. The cultivation techniques are about refining the body and spirit as one unit. The immortal aspects—alchemy, life extension, comprehending natural laws—directly fuel his martial prowess. When he fights, he’s not just throwing punches; he’s enacting a deeper truth he’s internalized. It can get repetitive, sure, but the core integration is there.

For a more recent take, 'Cradle' by Will Wight does something interesting. Lindon’s dual cores and his later path are a constant balancing act between pure madra (which has that refined, almost spiritual quality) and destruction. His advancement is intensely physical—cycling aura, refining his body in soulfire—but the endgame is clearly Ascension, a form of immortality. The techniques, especially the Heaven and Earth Purification Wheel, are described as physically grueling yet spiritually enlightening. It’s less about meditating on a mountain for centuries and more about the immortal journey being forged through relentless martial struggle. That feels like a valid, kinetic interpretation of the concept.

There’s also 'A Will Eternal' by the same author as 'I Shall Seal the Heavens'. It’s practically a satire on the trope, with Bai Xiaochun’s primary motivation being fear of death, which drives him to create ridiculously overpowered defensive and life-extending techniques. But because he’s in a cultivation world, those same techniques inevitably become martial nightmares. His obsession with living forever results in him becoming accidentally unbeatable. It’s a hilarious and surprisingly coherent take on how the two pursuits can be two sides of the same, very anxious coin.
