"And maybe this one too? It's about wolves." "Like the ones in your stories?" he asked. She nodded. "Exactly." Derrick shrugged, already marching toward the fantasy book section like he owned the place. "Books are my best friends. They don't yell. They don't lie. They just tell stories."

There is no mate bond, but having him close makes me feel more secure. “I can’t wait for you to see this.” He rubs his thumb on the top of my hand as he leads me to a store. It’s rare Bronx gets so excited about surprising me. We approach a bookstore with a dusty, old window display. In gold paint, there is a picture of a pan flute and a goat. The images are peeling and sundried as if they’ve been there forever. Over the pictures are the words ‘The Barded Goat Used & Collectible Books’.

And even when they hadn’t… I no longer let them land. I had too much peace in me now. There wasn’t room for shame anymore. Back at the house, I carried the books Darren had ordered for the nursery upstairs and placed them on the newly assembled shelf. They were all hardcovers with soft pastel covers and gold-stamped lettering: Goodnight Moon, The Velveteen Rabbit, Where the Wild Things Are, Dream Big, Little One, I Am Enough. I traced the spine of each book with my fingertip, whispering the titles softly.

She wondered and the bunny thought about it for a bit. “Then do what your heart tells you, I am sure if you admit everything to them they will forgive you. Besides, it’s just a book, your library has plenty of books already, they would not get mad over you losing one.” The bunny spoke so casually, not knowing the deeper issue rooted with it even after hearing the story.

"At least I won't get scurvy." "That you won't. Have fun at your sleepover." "I'm gonna trounce Kennedy at Killer Bunnies." Kennedy went brows up. "Should I be afraid?" "Beware the Cyberbunny," Flynn intoned. Killer Bunnies was another of Ari's favorite board games that she'd introduced Flynn to through a sound thrashing.
