’ Everyone agreed and went on to work. ‘Hey Anton.’ Hadrian called as he spotted his butler. ‘We’re picking red grapes, not pink.’ As soon as he saw what he was doing, he was so surprised that he dropped his basket. ‘Hey, be careful.’ Hadrian said as they started picking up the fallen grapes. ‘You should check the color of the grapes, when they’re bright red like this.’ the young Emperor said showing his butler some of the grapes that he picked which were bright red compared to Anton’s which are pale. ‘…it means they’re ready to be picked.’

Leah always had an opinion. The day was sticky with humidity, and he slapped a mosquito off of his arm. Continuing to wander along the rows, he found one length of vine that was mostly intact. It was a small hope, in the grand scheme of things, but seeing those white buds bursting from the vines felt like the greatest of victories. At least there was something. At least they could harvest a few grapes. It wouldn’t be nearly enough, but Adam was determined not to despair entirely.

Rose’s vineyard was in the suburbs east of Paris, and it was quite a distance to travel there. “Look what I’ve got, mom.” Her mom’s eyes widened as she looked at the plump and green grapes. “Is that— Are those Shine Muscat grapes?” Maia excitedly nodded and brought them out of the bag. She inspected the grapes and shook her head. “This won’t do. These grapes are way too big. Let me wash them and cut them into smaller pieces. Do you have a knife around you here, mom?” She looked around, then shook her head. “I don’t think so. But, they have one in the nurse’s station. Maybe you can go there and ask them for help.”

Mark stared at the two of them, the corners of his lips curled up. He then turned around and proceeded to checkout. After that, the cartons were loaded into the trunk. The three of them got into the car and left the vineyard. It was evening by then. The three of them had picked eight cartons of grapes. Eight cartons were too many for them, but Charlotte said she wanted to make wine, so they had picked more. They had also gotten a carton of seedless grapes. Charlotte said that the seedless grapes were easier to eat because she did not have to spit out the seeds.

She used a lot of technical jargon that neither of us understood, but it was clear by the way she talked that she was very passionate about the project. The waiter brought our starters, and I was a bit surprised when Sasha picked up the wrong spoon. She was using the tea spoon to eat her soup, instead of the soup spoon. But perhaps that’s just what she preferred. “This is really good,” she said, smiling. “I’m glad,” I told her. Over the starter course, Sasha explained the benefits of her hybrid grapes. She thought he had left, but when she walked out of the room, she was surprised to see him in the kitchen. She walked over and noticed a plate of Ruby Roman grapes in the fruit bowl which was previously empty. She remembered she didn't have these fruits in the fridge. "Where did the grapes come from?" she asked. She picked one and tasted it. It was very sweet. These grapes were expensive exactly because they were sweeter than regular grapes. "I had Samuel buy them for you," he replied, handing her a cup of hot milk. "I asked him to buy breakfast too." She drank some milk and placed the cup on the table. She opened the fridge and noticed it had been rearranged.
