She stayed silent for a long moment, then slapped Selene’s hand away. "Your mother is probably ashamed of you," Elara said. "Keep your ring. It’s the only thing you own that isn't covered in someone else's blood." They dragged her out of the vault, her boots scraping against the stone, leaving the doors wide open. The treasure sat there, glowing in the dark, waiting fo r the next person to die for it.

“But I am now.” Lucien’s eyes softened. “Good.” Silence stretched between them—thick and full of things unspoken. Then Lucien reached for something behind him. A small box. He held it out to her. It gleamed faintly in the firelight. “It’s a ring,” she said, confused. “A signet,” Lucien replied. “My mother’s. She was queen before the war. She ruled not with a sword, but with wisdom. She wore this as her symbol.”

"Fair point." She glanced at the remaining items, then gasped again. "Did he get you shoes and earrings too? STOP IT—AHHH!" Elle opened a large velvet box on the table and squealed. Inside were a pair of dangling earrings—each with a sparkling diamond at the top and a larger canary yellow diamond suspended below, the entire piece framed in a halo of brilliant white diamonds. "Finric Shadowclaw," Elle whispered dramatically, "you've officially outdone every man on this continent."

"Yes ... Oma also hopes so." The wishes of the two women who were very close to Erlan were too great for the happiness of both of them.
