Beatrice laughed, a light, tinkling sound that drew the attention of those around them. “Oh, you’re far too modest, Elena,” she said, giving Elara’s hand a gentle squeeze before releasing it. “A woman like you doesn’t simply appear out of nowhere without causing a few ripples. You must tell me, where have you been hiding all these years?”
Elara’s smile widened, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “Here and there,” she said vaguely. “I’ve spent much of my time abroad, traveling, learning. But I’ve always had a fondness for this city, so I thought it was time I returned.”
