He stepped closer, his words cutting deeper with every step.
“So tell me, Emily,” he said mockingly, “how did you manage to put them all in the palm of your hand?”
“You are wrong,” Emily shot back, her voice rising. She refused to let him twist the truth. “I never relied on men. Not once.”
Her chest burned as she spoke. Her name mattered to her. Her dignity mattered.
Stanley laughed again, sharp and unhinged.
“I did everything I could to reach the top,” he said, his tone turning vicious. “I studied harder. I sacrificed more. And still, you stood above me.”
