The captain’s hand slid along her arm, and a pale spark danced between them, an enchantment pinning her in place. Nyra struggled, but the magic held her tight, wrists locked by invisible chains. She resorted to her inner power, summoning silver light that flared around her mark. The enchantment sizzled, then snapped.
She twisted free, but the captain had already vanished into the shadows, leaving only the echo of his laughter.
Nyra staggered back, breath coming in ragged gasps. Maris remained bound, eyes vacant. Beyond her, in a carved alcove, stood her mother, Selene, her wrists also bound by cruel chains. A ceremonial blade hovered at her throat.
